Nathan Dollar, PhD, has been named the new director of Carolina Demography, an applied demography center located within the Carolina Population Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Most recently Dollar served as a research scientist and project director for the Dynamics of Extreme Events, People, and Places (DEEPP) survey at the Carolina Population Center, where he investigated the factors that shape how people and communities in eastern North Carolina prepare for, are affected by, and recover from extreme weather events.
“Nathan has a deep knowledge of the state, a strong passion for using data to help identify needs and opportunities, and considerable experience in both demographic work and engaging with the community,” says Carolina Population Center Director Karen Benjamin Guzzo. “I can’t wait to see how Carolina Demography, with support from the Carolina Population Center, will improve the lives of North Carolinians and the well-being of the state.”
Carolina Demography, which was founded in 2012, helps people and organizations across NC better understand the dynamic and rapidly changing state. Over the past decade, they’ve worked in all 100 counties across the state, including direct project work in 76 counties.
As Director of Carolina Demography, Dollar will lead a team of demographic researchers, evaluators, spatial analysts, coders, designers, and storytellers whose work informs decision-making and policy across North Carolina.

Dollar is a native North Carolinian. Born and raised in Wilson, NC, he received his BA in Sociology and Spanish from Western Carolina University, his MA in Sociology from Colorado State University and his PhD in Sociology from UNC-Chapel Hill. He has previously served in the U.S. Peace Corps in El Salvador and as Executive Director of Vecinos, Inc. Farmworker Health Program in Western NC.
Since 2014, he has served on the Governing Board for the NC Farmworker Health Program within the NC Office of Rural Health. Through these experiences, Dollar has gained a deep understanding of our state institutions and the complex issues shaping population changes in North Carolina.
“I’m from North Carolina, I’ve lived in almost every region of the state, and I have more NC state pride than anybody on the planet,” says Dollar. “That said, I am most excited about the opportunity to be a part of the critical services Carolina Demography provides, to lead the unit and serve the people of our state.”
